Since this article has caught your eye I am going to assume that you are considering starting your own business via the internet and have some concerns and questions about whether this is the right step for you. In this article I am going to give you an exercise to do that should help you get more clarity on this question and it's great fun to do.
In order to get the most out of this exercise I suggest that you find a place where you won't be disturbed and block out some time so that you don't feel rushed. Make the decision to set aside any other problems or concerns for that time period so that you can focus fully on the task. You could even put on some soothing, calming music to get you in the right mood. If you do need to finish this exercise by a certain time then set an alarm to let you know when to stop so that you don't find yourself clock-watching during the exercise. You will just need a pen and some blank paper or if you prefer you could open a Word document and type instead.
Write the following at the top of your blank sheet: My Ideal Work Day. Now I want you to describe in vivid detail everything you would do, say, feel, hear, etc on your ideal working day starting from when you get up in the morning until you go to sleep at night. Really indulge yourself and let your imagination run wild. Record things like when you start work, whether you travelled to work or stayed at home. Describe your surroundings wherever it is that you are working. Who are you working with or are you alone? What type of work are you actually doing and how do you feel while you are doing it? How long do you work? What do you have for lunch? Write down every little detail and really try to "see" yourself almost as if in some Hollywood movie as you go through what you would like to be a typical working day for you.
When you have finished then shake yourself out physically and mentally and review what you have written. Have you described a situation where you are working for yourself and running your own business? Either way this should give you a clear indication of what you do want whether that is just another type of job or indeed running a business of your own.
