Planning to put up a home business? Read on and find out the six essential ways on how to start your own.
1. Decide on the products or services you want to offer. In starting a small business, ask yourself these questions:
- What are the products/services I'll offer?
- Will the products/services be able to meet the needs of my market?
- Do I possess the skills I need to compete in the home-based marketplace?
- How sensitive the product or service is (regardless of marketing them to wide-ranging economic conditions).
- What makes me an expert in starting a small or home business?
2. Make sure you can do all the tasks necessary in your business. Before starting, you need to consider and understand carefully the daily tasks you will handle. Take note that in a small business, nobody else will do the tasks but YOU. Examples of a daily task typical of a business (big or small) includes:
- Marketing
- Bookkeeping
- Filing
- Ordering supplies
- Answering phone calls and replying to emails from customers
- Setting or scheduling appointments
3. Be aware of your competition and your market. In starting a small business, awareness over its concepts (e.g. handling the entire market for what your business has in store for them) is very important. In doing so, here are few questions to consider:
- Will you market your products/services to consumers, business or both?
- Who will purchase your product or service?
- How will you distinguish your business from possible competitors?
- What are the traits you think your potential client or customers posses?
- What is the advantage or disadvantage of your business?
4. Know the legal barriers in starting a small business. For example, if you live in a district subject to standard rules of an association or community, check them for restrictions. Find out if these restrictions include starting a business at home. If possible, also check your community's zoning laws before putting up your business.
5. List down the things that need to be done in starting a home business. Now that you already have your product or service, the next thing you need to do is to prepare things necessary in your business. You can list down the:
- Space you need for storage of equipment, records, supplies and inventory.
- An extra room for other purchased supplies.
- An area that will serve as your office.
6. Settle on your start-up costs. Calculate the total amount of money you need in starting a small business. While doing this, ask yourself these questions:
- Will I consider "construction costs"? If so, how much will I allot for myself or professionals I hired to get the job done.
- Am I going to purchase a franchise in the future?
- Should I be hiring an accountant, lawyer or a marketing specialist?
- What are the supplies I need during "Day One" of my business operations?
- Will purchasing a "beginning inventory" work?
